A Powerful Mobile Workstation

Our Milestone

9 May 2017 was another modest milestone for Performance Computing LLP as we delivered the very first mobile workstation we sold.

The customer is using it for finite element analysis.

The Lenovo ThinkPad P50 Mobile Workstation delivered is truly a very powerful mobile workstation.  The build of the P50 is solid, and at under 2.7 kg, is relatively light for a computer packing so much punch.

Workstation Specifications

Just look at the specifications:

Lenovo ThinkPad P50 Mobile Workstation

Intel Xeon E3-1535M v5 2.9 GHz (4 cores, 8 threads, 8 MB Cache, Up to 3.8 GHz)

64 GB (16x4) DDR4 2133 MHz ECC SO-DIMM

NVIDIA Quadro M2000M 4 GB

15.6 FHD IPS Non-Touch

720p HD 2D Camera Mic

Fingerprint Reader

Backlit Keyboard with Number Pad

Intel 8260AC+BT 2x2 vPro

512 GB SSD SATA3

1 TB HD 5400 RPM

6 cell 90 Wh Battery

170 W 3 pin UK

Smart Card Reader

Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit

It has ECC SO-DIMMs.  I have pointed out in a previous post that ECC memory is something that is very important to have in a workstation.

Very Rugged

Lenovo ThinkPad P50, like other ThinkPads, is tested to MIL-STD-810G standards, and other demanding tests beyond those in MIL-STD-810G.  As a side note I have studied the MIL-STD-810G document and did product testing according to the document during my time in a research institute.  I would say that ThinkPad P, T and X series are some of the most rugged corporate notebooks in the market.

ThinkPad P50 has display cover made of glass-fiber reinforced plastic, and bottom made of magnesium alloy and aluminium alloy.

Use Cases

ThinkPad P50 can be configured with up to two M2.SSD (6.0 Gb/s SATA and NVMe) and one hard drive with shock mounting.  NVMe drive options give very high IO performance.

ThinkPad P50 is great for CAD/CAM/CAE with NVIDIA professional graphics and option for 4K IPS display.  The bottlenecks of virtualization are memory capacity and IO capacity.  ThinkPad P50, with up to 64 GB of ECC memory and IO from SATA and NVMe SSDs, is also great for running virtual machines for development and testing.

Next Generation ThinkPad Mobile Workstations

The next generation Lenovo ThinkPad P51 and the 17.3 inch ThinkPad P71 have been released.  These are based on the latest Intel Kaby Lake mobile Xeon quad core processors with higher clock speeds, and the latest NVIDIA mobile Quadro graphics cards.  Options include NVMe drives.
